After recently settling with the state of Missouri over a casino license issue, Pinnacle Entertainment announced that it was canceling plans to expand its L’Auberge du Lac casino complex near Lake Charles, Louisiana. The project, named Sugarcane Bay, carried an estimated cost of US$305 million and would have included a new riverboat casino to go alongside the land-locked L’Auberge resort. The Australian government’s Productivity Commission recommendations are unlikely to be well received by the gambling groups Tatts and Tabcorp, which have exclusive retail wagering licences in some Australian states. The Age newspaper reports that the recommendations of the Commission place renewed pressure on the gambling companies, because it urges state governments to scrap their exclusive retail wagering licences and open up betting markets to greater competition.
